How Women Choose the Type of Breast Cancer Surgery They Will Have

Most Popular Breast Cancer SurgeryAlmost every woman with breast cancer receives some type of surgery to remove their tumor. Some patients get breast-conserving surgery, some get a mastectomy with reconstruction, while others have a mastectomy and no further treatment.

One research article (1) wanted to know if there was a relationship between the type of surgery a woman had for breast cancer and the specialty of the physician doing the surgery. They looked at women who had breast cancer and had surgery as part of their treatment. They noted that, of more than 10,000 women, 19 percent had a mastectomy, 60 percent had breast conserving surgery, and 21 percent had mastectomy with reconstruction surgery.

They noted that those facilities that had a large number of reconstructive surgeons tended to do more reconstructive surgery when compared to hospitals that had fewer reconstructive surgeons.
