Arugula Salad with Citrus Dressing

Arugula is a Cruciferous Vegetable That is Associated With Reduced Breast Cancer Risk:
A number of population studies have found a lower risk of breast cancer associated with consumption of one or more cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables contain a variety of sulfur-containing compounds call glucosinolates which can be converted into various isothiocyanates that have chemopreventive activities against breast cancer. Arugula contains a meaningful level of isothiocyanates. So try our Arugula Salad recipe and reduce your of breast cancer at the same time.

Recipe Makes 4 Servings

1 pkg. fresh organic arugula
1/2 avocado
1 or 2 clementines
8 sliced cherry tomatoes
1 lemon
1 orange
raspberries (handful)

Dressing Recipe:
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup orange juice (squeeze fresh orange)
2 tablespoon lemon juice (squeeze fresh lemon)
1/4 lemon, zested
1/2 teaspoon pink salt
1/4 teaspoon of celery seeds
1/4 teaspoon of dulse flakes
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon white wine vinegar

Blend all ingredients together in glass container. Serve immediately on salad.

Homemade Organic Plant Food Recipes For Your Healing Garden

How To Make Plant Food For Breast Cancer Gardening TherapyBy: Breast Cancer Yoga Staff.

Learning how to make your own plant food to replace depleted nutrients in your breast cancer healing garden is easy and beneficial for you and the environment. Plant foods and fertilizer purchased from the local garden nursery often has chemicals that may harm you. They don’t sound particularly edible either. In addition, they can be a bit pricey. For this reason, many gardeners are making plant food themselves using organic plant food recipes. Learn more about how to make your own plant fertilizer at home with the following ideas.

Green Tea
A weak solution of green tea can be used to water plants every 4 weeks (1 teabag to 2 gallons of water).

Aquarium Water
Water your plants with the aquarium water taken out while changing the tank. The fish waste makes a great plant fertilizer.

If you live near the ocean, lucky you! Collect dried seaweed from the beach (near cold-water only), rinse well to wash off salt then put in a barrel. Cover with water (to the top), cover with a lid and allow to brew for at least two months. To use: dilute with water to make a spray. Can help speed up flower and fruit production.

Boiled Vegetable Water
(always unsalted) After boiling vegetables, allow the water to cool then pour it on soil around your plants. The water is infused with goodies that the veggies have left behind.

Kitchen Scrap Infusion
Save vegetable peelings in a small bucket, cover with boiling water and allow to steep overnight (up to 2 days). In the morning, strain and use to water your plants. Use only plant based scraps and not meat or dairy.

Yard Refuse Infusion
Same idea as the kitchen scraps, this time using grass clippings (if pesticide-free), leaves, twigs, dead flower heads and anything else that you rake up or prune/deadhead. Store in a pail, cover with water and allow to steep for about a week or so (covered). When ready to use, strain out the bits (add them to your compost pile if you have one) and use the infused water in your garden. The downfall with this recipe is that it may contain seeds that the straining doesn’t catch.

Nettle or Comfrey Foliar Feed (Plant Food Spray)
You can make plant food from soft and lush leaves of plants such as Nettle or Comfrey. Since fresh shoots are quite soft, these are ideal plant foods. Place the fresh shoots and leaves of these plants in a container and then add enough water to cover them. This should be left like this for three to four weeks. After this, the pulp should be removed, and the liquid should be used as a foliar feed. However, before using it, make sure to dilute one part of the liquid with fifteen parts water. If you want to use it on open ground, you do not need to add any water. For using it as plant food for potted plants, dilute one part with ten parts of water.

Compost Tea
Compost tea can be made at home out of leftover food items and other detritus and is virtually cost free. A 5:1 ratio of water to compost is used. It takes about 5 parts water to 1 part compost. Preferably, the water should not consist of chlorine. In fact, rainwater would be even better. Chlorinated water should be allowed to sit at least 24 hours beforehand.
The compost is placed in a burlap sack and suspended in a 5-gallon bucket or tub of water. This is then allowed to “steep” for a couple of weeks, stirring once every day or two. Once the brewing period is complete the bag can be removed and the liquid can be applied to plants.

Epsom Salts Plant Fertilizer
This plant food recipe is excellent for use on most any variety of plant, used every 4-6 weeks.
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon Epsom salts
1 teaspoon saltpeter
½ teaspoon ammonia
Combine with one gallon of water and store in an airtight container.
*One tablespoon of Epsom salts can also be combined with one gallon of water and put into a sprayer. Even simpler than the above recipe. Apply once a month.

Now that you have some idea about how to make organic plant food, it is time to do a favor to your plants. Stop using those expensive and harmful store-bought chemical fertilizers and feed your plants some environmentally-friendly homemade organic plant food. It may take a little effort on your part, but remember it’s a great way to show your plants how much you care.
