Bali Seal is the pose that helps create strength from within.  Take it slow if you are starting out. After a few lifts and releases you will begin to feel the energy charge through you, giving you the internal as well as the external lift you need. Let us know how it felt. Namaste’

Contraindications

  • Knee injury

Instructions

  1. Begin seated on an appropriate size prop in between legs, ankles should  be comfortable.
  2. INHALE, bring arms in front, interlace hands in COMPLETION MUDRA (hands interlaced with thumbs and forefingers straight) and rise up  bringing arms overhead or to a comfortable place to lift up.
  3. EXHALE, lower arms and seat back down on heels, or a supporting prop simultaneously.
  4. Continue to INHALE, and lift up.
  5. EXHALE, and lower down.
  6. Coordinate the breath with the movement.
  7. Continue to flow up and down bringing a gentle attitude to each movement.
  8. Breathe deeply and allow your body to feel energized and rejuvenated.

Palm Tree Standing Yoga Pose For Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema

Palm Tree Yoga Pose is a great standing pose for breast cancer recovery and lymphedema management. This pose helps with stiffness or tightness in the chest area or the armpit (axilla) area that comes after either surgery, radiation therapy and lymphedema flare ups. Depending on the symptoms, your physician will select the best treatment for your condition. There is the possibility that lymphedema can be prevented, controlled or at least managed. Instructions

  1. Begin standing with left side facing the wall, feet hip distant apart.
  2. INHALE, extend arms out to “T” with finger tips touching the wall.
  3. EXHALE, draw hips away from wall while extending right arm overhead towards the wall and flatten palm on wall at the same time the hips (make sure the head does not collapse – turn head to face upper arm).
  4. INHALE, return arms to “T”.
  5. EXHALE, continue flowing back and forth for 5 times.
  6. EXHALE, sustain PALM TREE at the Wall for 3/5 breaths.
  7. INHALE, half turn to the other side with right side facing the wall.
  8. INHALE, arms to “T” with finger tips touching wall.
  9. EXHALE, draw hips away from wall while extending left arm overhead towards the wall. Don’t let the head collapse down creating an unnatural drop.
  10. INHALE, come back to center arms in “T”.
  11. Continue flowing back and forth, then sustain PALM TREE .
  12. INHALE, come back to “T”.
  13. EXHALE, lower arms and shake out.

Yoga For Lymphedema – Shining Warrior Pose (Flow)

Yoga and Lymphedema Management:
Practicing continuous flowing movements significantly improves the lymphatic system. When lymph fluid is disrupted because of breast cancer surgery, trauma or infection, excessive lymph fluid builds up. This stagnant fluid can play havoc on the tissues and create swelling. There also can be a reduction of the oxygen absorption in the lymphatic system which increases the chance for infection. Practicing a flowing yoga pumps the lymphatic fluid throughout the body’s channels, rather than allowing it to accumulate or back up. It is great for maintaining healthy breast tissue. To keep this fluid moving, we need to also foster relaxation. It will facilitate renewed or restored strength and flexibility.

Shining Warrior Pose (Flow) For Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema Management:
Shining Warrior Pose increases circulation to arms, shoulders and breast region by opening the ribcage and expanding the chest. These arm movements and conscious breathing activate lymphatic system.

Benefits:

  • Opens and expands pectoral muscles
  • Reduces postsurgical fibrous adhesions and scar tissue
  • Promotes axillary lymphatic fluid drainage which decreases blockages of lymph nodes
  • Softens stiff shoulders and/or frozen shoulders,
  • Aids flexibility of the rib cage and thoracic spine
  • Frees the breath and opens the chest
  • Improves leg strength and flexibility of quadriceps and calf muscles
  • Encourages balance while strengthening ankles
  • Calms the body by  harmonizing the breath to the movement
  • Increases ROM (range of motion) for arms and shoulders

Instructions:

  1. Begin standing. Bring right foot forward, 1 to 3 feet apart, toes and hips facing forward with back foot slightly turned out ( for balance). INHALE , bring hands in front of chest. Come into PRAYER MUDRA with shoulders relaxed.
  2. EXHALE, lift rib cage and lift chest up bringing arms out to side with elbows softly bent ( shoulders remain relaxed). Bend the front knee over the ankle (your front knee should be aligned above the ankle).
  3. INHALE, arms return and hands come back into PRAYER while the front leg straightens.
  4. Continue 5/10 more rounds and then repeat on left side.
  5. INHALE, bring hands in front into PRAYER MUDRA (palms together.)
  6. EXHALE, arms flow out while bending left knee.
  7. Continue 5/10 more rounds.

Breast Cancer & Fear
The diagnosis of breast cancer or other illness can produce fear, stress and other extreme emotions, often interrupting normal sleep patterns. When there is excessive tension in our physical body, the muscles tighten and the breath becomes erratic, preventing us from relaxing and allowing for much needed sleep.

Yoga Postures For Rest
There are a few things we can do to prepare for rest and maintain it. Doing reclined asana (yoga posture) if needed, right in the bed, helps. While in the yoga posture, become conscious of the breath by focusing on the “in and out breath”. If we can build a regular asana practice with conscious breathing, we release muscular tension and consequently our nerves relax. Restorative yoga postures are most helpful in this situation. Supported Bridge, Savasana, Supported Legs Up The Wall, Supported Child’s Pose are a few of the best poses for producing a restful state.

Yoga Breaths To Calm The Mind
When the breath is brought under control, the physical body functions better, since oxygen is absorbed efficiently and carbon dioxide is eliminated. This results in improved mental and emotional functioning, allowing for sleep. If thoughts takes over the mind try breathing deeply with your eyes focusing on an object. The mind and breath will then focus on a single point and the “monkey mind” will stop jumping around. This requires practice. It just doesn’t happen so please be determined and patient. You can do it.

Physical Benefits of Reclined Yoga Pose Supported Bridge
This specific, reclined, supported, yoga pose combined with deep breaths is intended to support recovery from breast cancer and assist in managing lymphedema. This yoga pose is a mild inversion that calms the nervous system and quiets the mind. Excellent chest opener which will free the breath.

Benefits

  • Strengthens buttocks, quads and hamstrings
  • Post surgical benefits of reducing fibrous adhesions and scar tissue
  • Opens chest and ribs, massages spine, frees the breath Opens front of body and pelvis
  • Raises hips above heart to reduce heart rate Alleviates stress and mild depression
  • Helps relieve symptoms of menopause
  • Therapeutic for asthma, high blood pressure, and sinusitis.

Instructions

  1. Begin on your back. Make sure head is in a natural alignment.
  2. Your back can rest on folded blanket so that your back body/kidneys feel soft and supported.
  3. Knees remain bent with ankles underneath. Place a block in between feet to help with alignment of knees and ankles.
  4. Arms relax along side body, palms facing up.
  5. Notice your breath and focus completely on relaxing your body starting with the crown of your head to the tips of your toes.
  6. Stay in this pose as long as comfortable. If uncomfortable start with a smaller bolster or blankets.
  7. You have the option of arms extended over.
  8. Stay for 10 full breaths/or more.
  9. When finished roll on to side off of the bolster(bolsters).

Note: If the bridge is too high adjust to lower bolster or folded blankets.

Half Head of the Cow Twist

Twists are valuable for supporting breast cancer recovery and for the repairing of breast tissue. Lateral movements that are inherent with twists encourage the lymph fluid away from the tissues toward lymph nodes which then circulate the fluid to functioning lymph vessels. If the lymph system cannot effectively drain, lymphedema may result. This pose will teach you how to relax your shoulders, lengthen the side body, reduce resistance to deepening the twist and open the hip flexors.

Benefits

  • Improves mobility and flexibility of spine
  • Stretches major and minor pectoral muscles
  • Provides deep stretch to tensor fascia lata (outer thigh)
  • Twist to waist and spine
  • Increases circulation and fluid dynamics of discs and lumbar region
  • Fosters relaxation and restful breathing
  • Opens hips and thighs
  • Relieves and softens iliopsoas (inner groin)
  • Releases sciatica

Contraindications

  • Lumbar injury, disc herniations
  • Hip/sacroiliac trauma

Instructions

  1. Begin in PARTIAL RECLINE, feet on bolster or prop with arms to side, palms up.
  2. INHALE, arms out in “T” position, place a small pillow or folded blanket under head.
  3. INHALE, cross right knee over left knee, with ankle to the outside of left thigh.
  4. Take the right ankle with left hand too begin the release of any muscle tension.
  5. Stay here until there is a release and you are ready for the twist.
  6. EXHALE, right knee over to the left into a twist and onto a supporting yoga prop.
  7. Make sure shoulders remain parallel to the ground with head facing straight up.
  8. Stay and breath for at least 10 breaths or longer. Allow the exhales to lengthen so to
    deepen into the twist. and to continue to release tightness.
  9. INHALE, bring hand to knee and help legs back up and return to center.
  10. EXHALE, extend legs over bolster and then repeat on other left side.

Leap Frog Pose (Flow) For Breast Cancer

This pose is very special because of the activity of going up and down and out. When there is continuous movement it heightens a flow of energy (cardiovascular) which creates internal heat and lengthens muscles. Leap Frog is great for full circulation to pelvis, hips, feet and chest. It will increase oxygen and the metabolism  in the body’s system.

Benefits

  • Opens and expands pectoral muscles
  • Reduces post surgical fibrous adhesions and scar tissue
  • Promotes axillary lymphatic fluid drainage which decreases blockages of lymph nodes
  • Softens stiff shoulders and frozen shoulder
  • Aids flexibility of the rib cage and thoracic spine
  • Frees the breath and opens the chest
  • Heightens a flow of energy for the body
  • Increases circulation to hips, feet, and ankles
  • Stimulates cardiovascular system (aerobic exercise) for heart center
  • Balances the glandular system
  • Stretches toes while creating balance
  • Stretches hamstrings
  • Lengthens spine while creating space between the vertebrae

Instructions

  1. Begin standing with feet hip distance apart, and place hands onto table, chair, or  yoga blocks.
  2. EXHALE, draw hips back and begin to lengthen spine and open chest region. Try  to keep the spine as straight as possible with soft knees.  Take a long INHALE.
  3. EXHALE, lower hips and bend knees to squat position, lifting heals up (if too much on knees use a CHAIR to sit on.)
  4. INHALE, lift hips up, straighten legs, bring head back to neutral and feet flat
  5. EXHALE, lower hips and bend knees to squat, lifting heals up (if too much on knees, you can use a chair to sit on.)
  6. INHALE, draw body back up, straighten arms, and bring head back to neutral.
  7. Continue up to 10 times, rest. When finished, come back to standing position.
