Eco-friendly Ways to Decorate and Improve Your Home

By Linda Williams, a breast cancer survivor and author of several non-fiction books focusing on science and the environment.

So you or a loved one has won the battle with breast cancer. Speaking from experience, the next question is, “What can I do to keep it from coming back?”

Building and construction materials
Actually, there are lots of things you can do in your living space. The one with the biggest impact is to make sure your next home is built by a LEED certified builder with as many sustainable, low impact materials as possible. It’s good for the environment and your health too!

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods.

You can also look for an older home with hardwood floors that have had years to release toxic fumes from construction glues and other materials. (Just make sure lead paint and asbestos are not present.)

If you want sustainable bamboo flooring, choose finishes that are water-based, solvent-free and don’t off-gas toxic chemicals. They may cost a bit more, but you’ll be better off health wise.

Garages are part of a healthy home too. Detached garages keep carbon dioxide (in auto exhaust) out of the home. If your dream home has an attached garage, leave the garage door open for a while after arriving home to allow exhaust fumes to vent away. It’s also better if your bedroom doesn’t share a wall with the garage since you spend so many hours sleeping.

To increase home venting, get your screens repaired or replaced so you can open the windows and exchange some of the stale indoor air for fresh (Skip it if you live in a metropolitan or highly polluted, industrialized area.)

Water
I’m lucky enough to live in a city that is militant about keeping its water pure. Our tap water is divine, but those with poor water quality might consider a water purifier or a filtering pitcher that cleans tap water before you drink it.

Along these same lines, consider using glass for pitchers and storage containers. Plastics exposed to high heat (dishwasher, microwave) release toxic chemicals into their contents. There are a few safe plastics, but you almost have to have a chemistry degree to find them. To be safe, choose glass for around the house and low reacting silicone for carrying a drink.

Painting
If you already have a home that is relatively non-toxic, you can keep it that way when painting and decorating. Choose paint with low or zero VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). Your sinuses will applaud you during painting and you’ll avoid toxic paint fumes that can linger for weeks and months.

While you’re at it, choose stimulating colors like yellow or red for kitchen and dining areas to boost appetite. Go with calming grays or blues for the bedroom. Cancer takes advantage of a stressed immune system, so appropriate colors can update your home and boost your mood too.

Cleaning products
Try switching your cleaning products to tried and true DIY home cleaners like vinegar or the growing number of natural products that use enzymes to clean instead of harsh chemicals. You can find these products for everything from dish and laundry soap to kitchen cleaners for eliminate grease and grime.

So you’ve assessed your home environment and tried some of these eco-friendly home ideas. What’s next?

Healthy décor
Healthy décor includes natural products such as cotton bed linens and wool blankets. Organic cotton pillowcases and sheets haven’t been treated with pesticides (while the cotton was growing in the fields) or harsh chemicals (at the manufacturing plant). There is also organic cotton fabric available to make custom curtains, slip covers, and other home items. It’s fun discovering all the home DIY projects possible. (Pinterest has tons.)

Not domestic? The cost of organic linens are dropping as the big box stores pick up the eco-friendly challenge and offer a variety of organic choices.

Plants
House plants are great additions to home decor (unless you have plant-eating cats like I do). In 1989, NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) published a study that showed how common houseplants such as English ivy, spider plants and philodendrons remove pollutants from indoor air.

Plants are natural air purifiers that boost your health by pulling toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, tricholorethylene and others from the air. If you already have these botanical wonders in your home, you know how they create a natural and relaxing vibe. Definitely a healthy win-win!

So whether you make a few or several changes to your home environment, you can be confident you’re embracing a healthy future.

Labyrinth’s for Physical and Emotional Healing

Labyrinth’s for Physical and Emotional Breast Cancer HealingBy: Dr. Robin B. Dilley, author of In A Moment’s Notice: A Psychologist’s Journey with Breast Cancer and a licensed psychologist,

During my journey with breast cancer treatment I found a very powerful symbol of healing in the Labyrinth. The labyrinth is an ancient symbol that has managed to stay present into the 21st Century. If we can tap into the labyrinth’s significance we can use it on a regular basis as part of our healing. This blog is about finding solace as well as empowerment by taking a walk, a walk to the center and back.

Breast cancer is a journey. It is not a journey that we have chosen, but a journey that is here and it is important to find ways to cope with it, manage it, and come out the other side of it thriving as humans.

As Dr. Lauren Artress says in her book, WALKING A SACRED PATH , “Walking the Labyrinth has re-‐emerged today as a metaphor for the spiritual journey and a powerful tool for transformation. This walking meditation is an archetype, a mystical ritual found in all religious traditions. It quiets the mind and opens the soul, evoking a feeling of wholeness.”

Transformation is the process of evolving from what is to something different. It often appears to happen all of a sudden, but in reality transformation is an extended process over time. Words that come to mind when I think of transformation are words like evolution and metamorphous.

Psychotherapy is a conduit for change. Spirituality is a path of change. They both have elements of relationship and together they are a lifestyle of daily transformation for self and for other.

As a person who has experienced breast cancer our life lessons parallel that of a Hero/Heroine’s journey. The Hero’s journey is that which requires that we master the unknown, overcome dangers, and defeat obstacles as we move toward the healing challis, the prized object of our journey. A Labyrinth walk mimics that of the Hero’s journey. The Hero or Heroine enters the journey to find the precious “challis.” Once the precious challis is obtained the question becomes “Now what?” The hero or heroine must make it back out to the world with the challis to bring the power of healing to others.

As people coping with breast cancer in all of its many phases of pre and post treatment, where mortality has broken the illusion of immortality the simple but influential process of putting one foot in front of the other is an amazing feat. As a people who have experienced breast cancer, life as we know it has come to an end and now the process or recreating a new one is an ongoing journey. Walk in for your inner world of peace walk out for peace for every person experiencing a potentially terminal illness, and especially kindred spirits with breast cancer. If you cannot find a labyrinth near you to walk, take this virtual walk at The Labyrinth Society.

I hope you have found this an interesting start to your emotional and spiritual health as a hero/heroine on your journey.

Estrogen Dominance and Xenoestrogens

Eliminate Plastic Packaging To Prevent Breast CancerBy: Dr. Christina Grant, A Holistic Healer, Intuitive Counselor, Teacher, and Author of The Holistic Approach to Breast Cancer: Every Woman’s Guide to Health, Vitality, & Wellbeing.

Estrogen dominance and xenoestrogens are words smart women are learning about to keep their bodies healthy and strong in our plasticized world.

Signs of excess estrogen in your body include painful or unpredictable periods, PMS, cervical dysplasia, depression, anxiety, worry, decreased libido, fatigue, weight gain in the hips and stomach, possibly cold hands and feet, and fibrocystic breasts or cancer. Estrogen dominance is partly caused from foods, cosmetics, and other products that carry xenoestrogens (fake estrogens) into the body.

Some chemicals found in plants act like the female sex hormone estradiol, our primary estrogen. Synthetic forms of this chemical are found in plastic, pesticides, dioxins, PCBs, and in drugs given to livestock and poultry to prevent miscarriage and promote growth.

To lower the chances for these xenoestrogens to enter your body and behave like estrogen, reduce or eliminate foods that come in plastic wrap and plastic packaging. This includes water you buy in plastic bottles, since chemicals in the plastic leach into food and water.

In a study at Tufts University published in Environmental Health Perspectives in 1991, Drs. Ana Soto and Carlos Sonnenschein observed that breast cancer cells placed in plastic dishes would grow quickly. Knowing these cells need estrogen to reproduce, they were curious about what contributed to the rapid cell growth. They discovered that the chemical nonylphenol, which prevents plastic from cracking, caused the growth of the breast cancer cells. Apparently nonylphenol had leached out of the plastic dishes and behaved like estrogen with the cells. Researchers then experimented with other commonly used plastics, detergents, and pesticides. They witnessed rapid growth when the breast cancer cells were exposed to these products. (See my post Breast Health through Liver Health for numerous ways to help your body clear these toxins.)

Conventionally-raised beef and dairy cows are given growth hormones. Their feed is treated with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. When you consume conventional milk, cheese, ice cream, cottage cheese, yogurt, chocolate, and processed foods with beef, milk, or milk products in them, you risk overloading your body with xenoestrogens. (Not to mention what the GMOs are doing.) Read more about this in Milk: Does it Do a Body Good?

Organic, grass-fed beef and dairy are the better choice. If you can’t find them or if they are too costly, look for hormone and pesticide-free products. Eat organic chicken and eggs when you can find them, organic grains, and produce that is free from toxic sprays. Note that chemicals used to kill bugs and fungi on the food supply penetrate the surface of whatever they land on, including the soil. Even washing these foods well before you eat them won’t take away the chemicals they have absorbed.

Sometimes you will be in situations where poor quality food and water is all there is. I find this happens most when I travel or attend public events. Until the “food consciousness” raises in this country and truly healthful choices are accessible, we can make the best of it based on what is available. Bless your food and water then return to your organic, food-from-nature, plastic-free diet when you return home.

Growing Sage Indoors To Nurture Breast Cancer Well-Being

Sage For Breast Cancer Gardening TherapyBy: Breast Cancer Yoga Staff.

Growing the medicinal herb sage indoors can be fun and emotionally therapeutic. Learn how to grow, harvest and dry sage as a breast cancer gardening therapy. Another therapeutic benefit of sage is smudging. Sage smudging is a powerful cleansing technique from the Native American tradition in which herbs are burned for emotional, psychic and spiritual purification.

Growing Sage Indoors
To raise the medicinal herb sage indoors, just plant several seeds in a five to six-inch pot. It is suggested to:

  1. Use plastic containers, as they tend to hold moisture longer than clay pots.
  2. Once the sage has sprouted, thin It back to one or two seedlings in each container.
  3. Fairly rich soil is necessary to produce healthy herbs.
  4. Plants should be placed on a sunny windowsill.
  5. When sage shoots are four inches high, enrich with water and a good liquid plant fertilizer.

How To Dry Sage
After the plants have reached maturity, they may be harvested as often as three or four times a year. To do this:

  • Cut the longer leaf stems back to about six inches and leave the little central shoots intact.
  • The Sage plant may look a trifle sad for a short time.
  • With small shears snip the gathered leaves from the severed branches, discard the stems.
  • Spread the greenery thinly on cloth or paper in a subdued light.
  • When the leaves are crispy dry, store them (whole or crushed) In a container that will keep out both light and air.

Spiritual House Cleansing With Sage Smudging
Spiritual cleansing is done to remove the negative energies or unwelcome spirits from your home using purifying herbs. It is good to cleanse your home once in a while to adjust the emotional environment of your home and maintain peace. Sage smudging is a powerful cleansing technique from the Native American tradition in which herbs are burned for emotional, psychic and spiritual purification.

Sage Smudging For Breast CanverHow To Perform Sage Cleansing:

  1. The first step involves de-cluttering the space and turning off all electronics.
  2. Take several deep breaths and bring your mind in a relaxed and positive state.
  3. Once you have reached a positive frame of mind, prepare the sage for burning.
  4. The white sage for smudging is available in the form of wrapped long bundle.
  5. If you have loose sticks of white sage, place a handful of sage in the earthen bowl. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and light the end of the sage stick.
  6. Hold it in upward position and say your prayers, chants or requests for positive energy to cast out of any negativity.
  7. Visualize a bright light within yourself that will provide you shield against dark forces and negative energy.
  8. Offer the smoke of the sage smudge in all the directions of the house.
  9. Slowly, carry the smudge in the entire room to make sure smoke reaches every corner.
  10. Use a large feather to fan the smoke in distant areas of your house.
  11. During cleansing focus on positive thoughts, recite prayers, chants. or soothing music in the background.
  12. Once you have completed the spiritual cleansing process of the entire home, extinguish the remaining sage bundle and you can save it for future use.

Suggested Sage For Smudging
A good general purpose smudge is sage (Salvis Apaina), because it is a healing plant. It is known to create an atmosphere of protection and security, immortality and longevity. Sage when burned has the effect of transforming the atomic structure of the air it affects, and the living creatures who are breathing that air.

Drinking sage tea and inhaling clary sage essential oil may affect estrogen-related cancer, such as breast cancer. During breast cancer it is suggested to avoid both sage tea and clary sage aromatherapy.

“Boy Do I “Get It.”

Spiritual Healing Process Boy Do I “Get It.” My Update
By: Diana Ross, Co-Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga.

“Anyone who has witnessed the gradual lessening of someone’s spirit (or enthusiasm) for life, for relationship, or for his or her work knows what it is to see the physical part of that person’s life shrivel into dust. Without participation of the human spirit, nothing can remain in healthy physical form.

This is absolutely real in the world of healing. Those that heal have Spirit. Spirit is essential to the healing process, and when any individual is unable to engage the power of his of her own spirit on the healing journey, that person is preparing to die.”

Intuitive Diagnosis Caroline Myss, Ph.D

It has taken me this long to be able to share with everyone my current journey with lung cancer, my quality of life, and Spirit. I have been humbled by this disease. I have been blessed by this disease. I have been closer to God and felt forsaken by God but I get it that maintaining a healthy “Spirit” is the key; without it quality of life is over.

After having my breast cancer I thought cancer isn’t that hard so when I was diagnosed with lung cancer my attitude was the same. I thought I had the answers. Well I can officially say I don’t have the answers and am humbled by my gross misunderstandings. My heart goes out to everyone who has to walk this walk of cancer and especially to those that don’t have the support, love and hope.

Dawn and I started Breast Cancer Yoga to offer Hope; to Inspire our readers to continue seeing their healing journey. To read about miracles, to make better food choices, to try new healthy alternative sources but it all pales if your Spirit is beat up by the disease. I have been there. Crying in the shower because I had zero energy to wash my hair – so I cut it off and now take baths and ask for help. I cannot do this on my own. Nor can anyone else. Ask for help. Let your friends help. They want too. I never knew I was loved so much until now. Heck I fell in love with my husband all over again. He has been my hope. Maybe instead of the blog reading being INSPIRED it should read being INSPIRIT.

My comments I want to leave you with is forgive everyone, which includes forgiving yourself, release all resentments; they are useless for healing. Don’t regret what you have done just shine a light on it and send it too on its way. Love is the answer so don’t hesitate with the hugs and loving comments. Be sincere. God is watching. I want to live but I do realize that cleaning my spiritual house is important and impermanence is just that – The flow of life.

Estrogenic Cooked Meat Carcinogens

Cooked Meat Causes CancerBy: Michael Greger, NutritionFacts.Org.

In the 90’s two international studies found an association between breast cancer and intake of fried meat and broiled meat in Finland and Uruguay. In 2000 researchers in Iowa identified the probable culprit, a heterocyclic amine abbreviated PhIP. Heterocyclic amines are a class of ubiquitous mutagens found in cooked meats, poultry, fish, and cigarette smoke.

Studies found an association between breast cancer and intake of fried meat and broiled meat

The effect was confirmed on Long Island, and extended to grilled barbequed and smoked meats but why more breast cancer risk? Well, these cooked meat carcinogens are mutagenic, meaning they damage DNA; in fact you can directly correlate the number of DNA mutations in breast tissue with estimates of dietary intake.

They asked women undergoing breast reduction surgery about their meat cooking methods and found that the intake o processed, fried, and stir-fried meat associated with the number of DNA mutations they found in their breast tissue. But what surprised everyone was that not only may these meat chemicals trigger the original cancer causing mutation, they may then promote the growth of the tumor, as PhIP was discovered to be a potent estrogen.

  • Meat chemicals trigger the original cancer causing mutation
  • Meat chemicals may then promote the growth of the tumor

They dripped the kinds of levels of PhIP you’d expect eating cooked meat and found that it activated estrogen receptors almost as powerfully as straight estrogen, and that’s what they saw when they tried it on breast cancer cells. They found it proliferative potency approaching that of to pure estrogen.

Eating cooked meat activated estrogen receptors almost as powerfully as straight estrogen

They conclude that PhIP possesses estrogenic activity at low concentrations … supporting the idea that exposure to PhIP, even at low doses, could result in estrogenic effects. We suggest that the well-established and unequivocal genetic toxicology of PhIP coupled with its estrogenic activity could drive clonal expansion and promote growth of the initiated phenotype. These were breast cells in a petri dish, though.

How do we know these carcinogens make it not only into the breast after you eat cooked meat, but into the breast ducts, where most breast cancers arise—so-called ductal carcinoma. We didn’t know for sure, until this study, which measured the levels of PhIP in the breast milk formed in those ducts of nonsmoking women, and the average concentration they found, was point one nanomoles per liter, right here, significant proliferative potency. One of the women was vegetarian, though, and of course none was detected in her breast milk.

VIDEO DESCRIPTION: DNA-damaging chemicals formed when meat is cooked stimulate breast cancer cells almost as much as pure estrogen and can infiltrate the ducts where most breast cancers arise. This is the first of a four-part video series on heterocyclic amines, these DNA-damaging chemicals formed in cigarette smoke and when mammal, bird, and fish muscles are cooked. I’ve covered them previously in my videos Muscle Tremors & Diet (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/muscl…), Fast Food Tested for Carcinogens (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/fast-…), and Carcinogens in Roasted Chicken? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/carci…) Carcinogens tend to either initiate or promote cancer, rarely both. Not only may heterocyclic amines trigger the original mutation and help the tumor grow, they may also aggravate cancer invasiveness.

Cancer, Interrupted: Green Tea

Green Tea For Breast Cancer
By: Michael Greger, M.D. NutritionFacts.org.

Using the cooked meat carcinogen PhIP to turn normal breast cells cancerous, researchers explore the use of green tea to interrupt this malignant transformation.

More than 85% of breast cancers are sporadic and attributable to long-term exposure to environmental carcinogens, such as those in the diet, through a multistep disease process progressing from non-cancerous to premalignant and malignant stages.

Now we know that the chemical carcinogen (PhIP) is one of the most abundant heterocyclic amines found in high-temperature cooked meats and is recognized as a breast carcinogen. However, the PhIP’s mechanism of action in breast cell carcinogenesis is not clear.

How does it do it? Well in this landmark new study they “demonstrated, for the first time, that cumulative exposures to PhIP at effectively induced progressive carcinogenesis, cancer transformation of human breast cells from a non-cancerous stage to premalignant and malignant stages in a dose- and exposure-dependent manner.” They started out with normal human breast cells. And were able to transmute them completely into cancer cells just using that cooked meat carcinogen found predominantly in fried bacon, fish, and chicken. That’s all it took, and Jekyll becomes Hyde.

Now PhIP was already established as a carcinogen, the reason they did this was to develop a model of ”human breast cancer carcinogenesis”, from beginning to end to test various interventions to see if we can somehow stop this process of cancer formation. For example, three recent meta-analyses reviewing all the epidemiological, or population-based evidence concerning green tea consumption and breast cancer risk concluded that green tea consumption may be protective.

Well let’s put it to the test. Here’s the response of normal breast cells to repeated exposure to the cooked meat carcinogen PhIP using six different measures of cancerous qualities. They all go up—but, if you add a little green tea phytonutrients, the transformation to breast cancer is blunted, it was indeed “effective in suppressing PhIP-induced cellular carcinogenesis and tumorigenicity.”

Vegan Creamy Corn Chowder Recipe For A Cancer Free Lifestyle Diet

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

By: Breast Cancer Yoga Staff.

I know what most of you are thinking: Corn is a starch – how could it possibly help with cancer prevention? Well, I was just as surprised to hear that corn has it’s right to sit at the table. There is a recent research study at Cornell University which indicated that cooking corn unleashes beneficial nutrients including carotenoids (plant version of vitamin A) that can substantially reduce the chance of heart disease and cancer. Plus cooked corn retains its anti-oxidant activity even after the loss of vitamin C. In fact, cooking increases the anti-oxidants in corn by approximately 53 per cent. Isn’t this a good thing to find out. I love corn. Always use organic ingredients when possible.

Ingredient

4 cups vegetable stock
1 to 2 cups of non-dairy option (soy, almond, coconut or soy)
4 Yukon potatoes diced in cubes
1 cup of diced celery
1 cup of carrots sliced in 1/2 inch cubes
4 cloves garlic
1 yellow onion (large)
2 lbs frozen corn
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp turmeric
1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)
1/4 teaspoon pink salt
pepper

———————————————————————————————————–

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a 4 quart pot over medium heat. Stir in onions and celery; cook until just slightly golden 3 minutes. Stir in carrots, celery, garlic and red pepper flakes; cook until slightly golden 5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, bring water to a boil. Stir in bouillon to 4 cups of water. When bouillon cubes have dissolved, add water, corn and potatoes to pot. Cook until vegetables are tender. Stir in cumin, turmeric, salt, and pepper. Add water, if necessary.
  3. Reduce heat to low for 10 to 20 minutes.
  4. Using a blender put 1 cup of soup in blender with 1 cup of non dairy choice and blend for 30 seconds. Here you have a choice of blending the entire soup or adding half blended and half unblended soup together. This makes the soup a bit chunky. If the soup is still steaming hot, make sure to either keep the opening on top of your food processor open, or lift the lid often for steam to escape. If steam builds up in a close container it can explode the lid off.

Cancer Prevention With Food, Thoughts and Botanicals

Cancer Prevention With Food Thoughts and Botanicals

By: Dr. Ellen Kamhi, The Natural Nurse.
CANCER- just hearing that word out of a doctors mouth sends fear through the listeners mind. Many people react with the thought- how could this happen to me? However, in most cases, cancer does not just HAPPEN. It can be traced to specific causes, and most of those causes are under the control of people themselves. Smoking is one behavior that directly increases the possibility of getting cancer.

Another is allowing oneself to be overweight. In fact, obesity
increases the risk of getting three of the most common types of cancer — breast, prostate and colorectal, and also endometrial, gallbladder and kidney cancers.

Obese men are 30 to 40 percent more likely to die of cancer than their lean counterparts, while obese women are 40 to 50 percent more likely.

Researchers are not certain how being overweight increases cancer risk, but they do know that excess fat changes the way the body uses glucose, forcing the pancreas to produce extra insulin, which appears to encourage tumor growth. Also, fat changes the way estrogen acts in the body, which may stimulate some cancers, such as those of the breast, prostate and uterus. Being significantly overweight may also makes it more difficult for doctors to find tumors before they grow dangerously large.

The exact program which leads to significant body fat reduction – increasing exercise and the consumption of vegetables, along with decreased consumption of junk food – is highly cancer protective as well. In addition to vitamins and minerals, vegetables have been shown to have other vital health-promoting substances. In one recent study, researchers at the University of Washington, in Seattle, have found that vegetable consumption, particularly intake of cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower and broccoli, lowers the risk of prostate cancer in men.(Journal of the National Cancer Institute 2000;92:61-68). Cruciferous vegetables in particular, may exhibit a more powerful effect against cancer than other vegetable due to their high isothiocyanate content. Isothiocyanates activate enzymes present in cells, which, in turn, neutralize carcinogens. It would be best to choose organic vegetables, because pesticide ingestion has also been linked to an increase in cancer.(Ardies, C. M.; Dees, C. Xenoestrogens significantly enhance risk for breast cancer during growth and adolescence. Medical Hypotheses, 50, 6 ,1998,457-464)

Overall detoxification aids the immune system to function at an optimum level. This is the bodys natural defense against the development of cancer. Organic fresh fruits and vegetables, raw, steamed and juiced, provide an excellent foundation. They are nourishing and easy to digest, with plenty of naturally occurring fiber. Skin brushing, jumping on a mini-trampoline, and using a sauna, are all part of the detoxification program, particularly aimed at keeping the lymphatic system flowing smoothly, which discourages the growth of cancer.
Cancer Prevention With Mind:Body Connection
A Mention of Mind/Body

It cannot be emphasized enough how important spiritual and emotional work is to the support of continued wellness. Taking some time to connect with the spiritual/emotional aspects of life is a supremely important aspect for preventing cancer. It is well known that cancer patients who attend support groups actually live longer.( Spiegel D, Bloom JR, Kraemer HC and Gottheil E. Effect of psychosocial treatment on survival of patients with metastatic breast cancer. Lancet. ii: 888-91. 1989). These results cannot yet be fully explained through science, but is well understood in the teachings of metaphysics as well as by indigenous shamanic healers throughout the ages.

Herbs Can Help
In order for the body to properly detoxify, it is necessary to clean out the natural filters; the liver and kidneys. Dandelion, a common weed, is used both as a food and medicine everywhere in the world where it grows. It is a potassium sparing diuretic, that works to cleanse and support both the liver and kidneys. Herbs which contain berberine, such as Oregon Graperoot and Goldenseal support the liver, and Milk Thistle has been scientifically proven to be liver protective.(Gupta, O. P.; Banerjee, S. K.; et al, Anti- inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities of silymarin acting through inhibition of 5- lipoxygenase. Phytomedicine 7:1, March, 2000, 21-24) Turmeric, the orange colored spice used in curry has additional benefits, and has been shown to have anti-tumor activities.( Navis I, Sriganth P, Premalatha B. Dietary curcumin with cisplatin administration modulates tumour marker indices in experimental fibrosarcoma. Pharmacol Res. 1999; 39(3):175-179). I keep some in a shaker and regularly add it to food right at the table.

Herbal combinations can be used as teas, capsules or tinctures. A well known combination which may give additional protection against cancer contains sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella), burdock root (Arctium lappa), slippery elm inner bark (Ulmus fulva), turkey rhubarb (Rheum palmatum), red clover (Trifolium pratense), and watercress (Nasturtium officinale). Most of these herbs grow wild on Long Island. Once you learn to identify them, you can grow and pick your own, use them fresh, or dry them for year round availability.

A specific kind of mushroom, Maitake mushroom(Grifolia frondosa), contains a specific polysaccharide, called beta-glucan . One component , 3-branched, B-1,6-glucan. increases white blood cell motility and overall function of the immune system. Perhaps the ancients were not so far off , when they concluded that these mushrooms increase “chi” , which is movement or energy!!
