Eco-friendly fertilizer for your garden – used coffee grounds

coffee-grinds-for-your-gardenUsed Coffee Grounds — Put Them to Use in Your Garden

If you’re looking for an organic, totally eco-friendly fertilizer for your garden plants, then give used coffee grounds a try. Used coffee grounds are slightly acidic and full of beneficial nitrogen, a mineral that aids vegetable and plant growth. Coffee grounds are especially good to use on your tomato plants and pepper plants, which really thrive on nitrogen.

In addition, coffee grounds, will create a natural acidic form of bacteria in your garden soil which boosts the growth of not just your tomatoes and pepper plants, but also other acid-loving plants like roses, azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, blueberries and even evergreens.

For use as fertilizer, you can simply incorporate some of the grounds into the soil, gently working them in around and near the base of the plant. Just sprinkle the grounds around the plant’s base and work them into the soil a little — you can even use your hands to do this, or use a garden trowel.

Benefits of Using an Organic Fertilizer vs. a Synthetic One

  • Not only are you using something organic if you opt to give coffee grounds a try, you are recycling too! Instead of those grounds going down the garbage disposal or into your trash, you’re recycling them into your garden soil. But on top of this, you’re helping the environment in a number of ways:
  • Are you aware that synthetic fertilizers, such as Miracle-Gro®, contain ammonium phosphate and several other chemicals that can be toxic to your soil and plants? So, you’re not adding anything toxic into your soil.
  • Synthetic fertilizers are prohibited from use in certified-organic farming. So, you’re maintaining an organic growing environment.
  • Over application of a synthetic fertilizer will kill the friendly soil-microbes that need to exist in your garden soil. So, you’re encouraging healthy soil, not killing off the natural beneficial Mother nature intended to be in our soil.

Eco-conscious gardeners

And finally, you’re not contributing to environmental pollution. You’re not buying a product that had to be manufactured (possible air pollution issues), packaged (manufacturing of containers, outer packages, etc. which might mean more possible air pollution), and then transported (fuel use; even more possible air pollution) to the store. You get the idea.

If you’re not a coffee drinker

So, think about using coffee grounds as a wonderful organic fertilizer instead of a synthetic one. If you’re not a coffee drinker, just check out a local coffee shop — most are happy to give away their used grounds, and many (Starbuck’s being one) have a special can in their store where they place their used coffee grounds so eco-conscious gardeners can come and take them home.

Easy To Grow Citronella

Citronella For Breast Cancer Healing GardenMany people use chemical mosquito repellant or some sort of toxic pest spray and thinking nothing of it.  Lets use healthy alternatives in our healing garden and reduce breast cancer risk.  When we spray toxic chemicals into our environment (already laden with the same) we are also setting ourselves up for breast cancer.

Citronella Research

Citronella scent is one of the main ingredients in many insect repellents. It works by masking more desirable smells to mosquitoes, making people harder to find. There are a variety of other herbs that are considered pest control plants.Citronella in healing garden

Consider placing a Citronella on your patio, by your windows and doors. While you don’t need to plant your mosquito-deterring plants in pots, the portability that pots allow is a great asset. You can move them outside to wherever family and friends happen to be at the moment. Choose several containers and arrange different kinds of plants in them to produce not only an attractive container garden, but also a readily available, portable mosquito repellant station.

Citronella Plant (Cymbopogon nardus or Citronella winterianus)Citronella For Healing Garden

  • Citronella, a grass, is considered a weed in some areas due to its ability to take over and  more readily accepted plants are squeezed out.
  • Citronella is a strong-smelling grass and in the right place, works to help discourage mosquitoes.
  • It can grow to a height of five or six feet in the ground in warmer climates.
  • In cooler climates, the best approach is to plant it in large pots (with casters on the bottom) so it can be wheeled indoors during the cold

CitronellaPlease – do your best to get pesticides out of your environment.  If you regularly have your home and garden sprayed with insecticide, consider some alternatives, think about the fat cells in your breasts and let’s make our environment and our bodies a much cleaner, healthier place.

5 Beautiful Garden Ideas For Breast Cancer Healing

Here are 5 Ways to Contemplate in a Breast Cancer Healing Garden
Just as there are many forms of contemplation, people have a variety of needs from a healing garden. Any space where people feel comfortable and safe will be a good place in your garden to pray, meditate, contemplate or simply de-stress. This is about creating a space within your garden to focus your thoughts, calm your mind, and revel in a little peaceful connecting.

Here are 5 Ideas for a Beautiful Healing Garden:

Garden Altars: You can easily create a very focused space outside to gain some peace. Gather items that you find inspiring or calming–a candle, some flowers in a vase, smooth river stones with meditative words etched onto them, a shallow bowl of water–and put them on a bench, a tree stump or a large boulder. Whatever it is that you find restful and meditative.Garden Alter For Breast Cancer Healing

Prayer Gardens: For those who prescribe to a more biblical perspective, try incorporating plants from the Bible into your garden spot. Lilies, cypress, hyssop, mint, roses (Rose of Sharon, actually, but feel free to take some liberties), olive trees–complete lists can be found easily online to create a more encompassing garden theme. The theme may not be immediately recognizable to visitors, but this spot is for you.Prayer Garden For Breast Cancer HealingYoga Deck: Yoga is a great exercise for flexibility and stretching, but it’s also very calming and meditative. With emphasis on movement and breathing, you can easily get into a contemplative mood. Tai Chi works much the same way. If you love these forms of exercise and contemplation, why not create a space in your garden so you can do these things outside? Construct a yoga deck low to the ground, add a possible side wall for more challenging poses and have a small water feature nearby.Yoga Deck For Breast Cancer Healing garden

Labyrinths: Labyrinths can be created in your yard on a large or smaller scale, and for a lot of money or for just a bit of cash, depending upon the materials you choose. Pave, plant or place rocks in between the pathways, and walk your worries away til you reach the center. Stay for a bit at that point, then turn around walk the same path out. The bilateral movement is known to promote a sense of peace, calmness and tranquility. Backyard Garden Labyrinth For Breast Cancer Healing

Meditation Garden: Meditation gardens have calming background sounds such as the breeze-driven rustling of ornamental grass, the delicate clatter of bamboo, and water gurgling from a fountain. Muted foliage works along with the scent of blooms or herbs. Backyard Breast Cancer Meditation Garden

Just as there are many forms of contemplation, people have a variety of needs from a healing garden. Any space where people feel comfortable and safe will be a good place in your garden to pray, meditate, contemplate or simply de-stress.

How To Get Your Healing Garden Off Drugs With Natural Pesticides

Breast Cancer Pesticide Free GardenMany common pesticides (such as ant, roach and mice poisons) have been linked to breast cancer. It probably shouldn’t surprise us that these compounds can be dangerous; they are designed to kill insects with which we share many common biological systems!

Several pesticides are known endocrine disruptors (they disrupt natural hormone-signaling pathways), and through these mechanisms have been implicated in increased risk for breast cancer. In addition to effects by themselves, these chemicals have been shown to have additive effects with other kinds of endocrine disruptors. In other words, exposures to small doses of pesticides may have greater effects when people are also exposed to other chemicals to which we are all commonly exposed.

Unfortunately, when pesticides are applied in the home, they don’t just kill bugs and disappear. Rather they often stick around (for years or decades) and are found in the air and on the dust we touch and breathe, meaning that we all have sustained and multiple exposures to these toxic chemicals. And when we apply them outside, pesticides enter the air we breath, fall on the lawn on which we walk and our children play, and eventually seep into our water. The result can be devastating for the wildlife with which we share our world, and also may have significant impact on rates of human diseases, including breast cancer.

How to make an organic pesticide made from vegetables

This is a great recipe and I wanted to share this with you because gardening season is upon us. The materials used to make the pesticide should be easy to obtain.

You will need:

  • an empty & clean gallon jug (such as a milk jug)
  • a spray bottle with spray nozzle
  • a funnel
  • a piece of cloth such as a shirt or bandanna
  • a pot that can hold 1 gallon
  • 2 small onions
  • a jalapeno pepper
  • a clove of garlic
  • some dish soap

Take 1 gallon of warm water, dump it in a pot and you’re ready to begin making the pesticide.

The best way to minimize insects inside and outside the home is through careful and regular cleaning. Some good resources for learning more about pesticide alternatives for the home and garden are listed below.pesticide free yardPesticides and alternatives Information –  United States

How to Create a Naturalized Healing Garden

Winter Yoga GardensBreast cancer survivors are always searching for ways to minimize toxins and pesticide in their lives. Create a naturalized garden that offers so many benefits on the level of health, environment, economy, efficiency, and time management.

Health: by minimizing lawn and adding shrubs, trees, and plants you are contributing to the air, allowing for more oxygen to be cleaned, allowing you to breathe fresher air.

Environment: With the mass of development arising every day, we have lost much of our biodiversity that makes the ecological world go around. A naturalized garden can promote life in the form of insects, butterflies, birds and small animals. (Keep in mind, they won’t bug you, they’ll just enjoy your garden)

Economy: Most plants recommended for a Naturalized garden will need little attention once they are established. You will save money by not having to water plants every day. A well planned naturalized garden will do well with the water nature provides. Most plants are also inexpensive, and can often be shared among other natural garden lovers.

Efficiency: Naturalized gardens, once established, become their own working engine. The insects are turning the soil and adding nutrients every day, the bees birds and butterflies are taking care of the pollination of plants. In time, this leaves little else for you to do except watch and enjoy!

Time management: No more weekly lawn cutting or water schedules. No worrying over water restrictions, or bad patches in the lawn. A naturalized garden flows and grows without much of your help. Mostly, you get to enjoy it!

Consider adding a patio centered in your naturalized space and allow yourself to be part of nature, while enjoying your own personal oasis!

Give An Organic PlantChristmas Rose Gift Idea

Charlie Nardozzi of the The Organic Authority suggests you look beyond poinsettias and give an unusual organic plant. Give a Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger), it treats you to large white flowers from November to March, with a magnificent crown of stamens at their heart. The Christmas Rose is almost completely unaffected by snow or frost. Although the plant droops a bit, it will straighten up again as soon as the temperature starts to warm up.

The holidays is the perfect occasion (excuse) to deploy an eco-agenda. Give a satisfying gift, give something that gives a green nod to the planet.
