5 Ways Yoga Benefits Cancer Post-Treatment Fatigue

Yoga For Cancer Related FatigueIf you’re a cancer survivor and feeling tired or even worse, even long after treatment, you are not alone. About one-third of breast cancer survivors experience this debilitating condition for anywhere from a year to several years post-treatment.

Cancer-related fatigue, (CRF)is very common in breast cancer patients.  Fatigue can often be confused with tiredness. Tiredness happens to everyone. One would expect to be tired  after certain activities, treatments or from daily activities. Sleep and resting is most important when recovering. Fatigue can prevent you from functioning normally and impacts your quality of life.

However, fatigue is an unusual or excessive whole-body tiredness is not relieved with sleep. It can be acute (lasting a month or less) or chronic (lasting from one month to six months or longer).

How To Cope With Cancer-Related Fatigue
The precise reason is unknown, but it may be related to the process of the disease itself or through the chemotherapies and radiation treatments. (CRF) is one of the most common side effects of cancer and its associated treatments. Usually, it comes on suddenly, does not result from activity or exertion, and is not relieved by rest or sleep. It is often described as “paralyzing.” It may continue even after treatment is complete.

What Cancer Patients Can Expect From A Yoga Practice :

  1. women with post-treatment fatigue were still feeling more invigorated than before they started
  2. women become more energized
  3. women see improvement in mood and sleep
  4. women are typically more relaxed, and more aware
  5. women are more accepting of what life brings to them

To Assist Patients As They Cope With CancerUnfortunately there’s no conventional therapy to resolve it, but studies are increasingly showing yoga designed specifically for breast cancer survivors is helping women to catch a second wind. In fact, a recent UCLA study found that three months after beginning yoga, women with post-treatment fatigue were still feeling more invigorated than before they started. Not only do women become more energized, but they see improvement in mood and sleep; they are typically more relaxed, more aware, and more accepting of what life brings to them. All these attributes are so critical as we work toward our continued mental and physical well-being, and ultimately, our healing.  We suggest ABC Workbook For Cancer Patients for additional post-treatment tools.

Cancer Patients: The Effects of Light and Dark on Physiology

Changes in our physiology during light and dark | Is artificial light disrupting our rhythm?Let’s look today at what effects changes in light and dark cycle (our circadian rhythm) have on our body. Is messing with this natural cycle affecting our health?
Our physiology is organized to change with time. The daily changes that happen are very important for our health and wellness. For example, we need rest and sleep in order to heal and restore.

Light and absence of light, detected by the eye, is the major cue used by the body to discriminate day from night and to create our circadian rhythm. If this rhythm is disrupted, many parts of our physiology can be affected.

Take a look at the infographic below which shows some of the physiological factors that vary from the light of day to the dark of night.

From the above, we can see that many different systems in our bodies have a rhythm. This temporal organization of our physiology is critical for our health.
Disruption of our circadian rhythm has been linked to many disease processes, including metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disease, intestinal dysbiosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer.

In the past, we had predictable periods of daily light and dark, driven by the sun rising and setting. These set our circadian rhythms. When it was daylight, the physiology on the left-hand side of the infographic applied and when it was dark, that on the right-hand side applied.

The electric light bulb
But then the electric light bulb was invented.  This has significantly impacted our light and dark cycle, drastically reducing the dark part.  The part when our body is healing.
Our boundaries of light and dark are now blurred. The sun goes down and we turn on the lights. Instead of natural light-dark cycles, we now use lights to illuminate us for 4 or more extra hours. Our biological processes are consequently not as synchronized as they used to be. This means hormones, gene expression, immune function, mood, metabolism, our gut microbiota may all be affected.

Light:dark time importance
Light and dark are the key. It’s not just asleep and awake. It is those triggers that shift us from one stage to the other and having a rhythm that the body can be entrained towards.  Our nighttime physiology is our dark physiology not just sleep physiology. The dark transitions us. Things begin to change as the light disappears.

Time to go back to the light of fires and candles?
Obviously, we don’t want to give up the convenience of our electric lights and stop using light emitting electronic devices like televisions, computers, iPhones etc at night. None of this huddling around the fire or candles to read our paper. But if this light is affecting our health is there something we can do? I’ll explore some options next week.
In the meantime, pay attention to how many hours you use lights in the house after it is dark outside. How bright are your lights at home? How close to bedtime do you watch TV or use computer/phone screens? If you get up in the night to go to the bathroom, do you switch the light on?

Lavender for Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Lavender oil, distilled from lavender flowers, is “most often used in aromatherapy and massage. Despite its popularity…only recently [have] scientifically-based investigations [been undertaken] into its biological activity,” however. There have been “small-scale studies” suggesting benefit from lavender massage; but, maybe it’s the massage, not the lavender.

There was a study on patients in intensive care, comparing massage with odorless oil to lavender oil, and though patients massaged with lavender oil did say they “felt less anxious and more positive,” there were no objective differences found in terms of blood pressure, breathing, or heart rate. Frankly, maybe the lavender was just covering up the nasty hospital smells.

Subsequent studies using more sensitive tests did find physiological changes, though. We know, for example, the smell of lavender changes brain wave patterns. But, what effect does this have? Well, evidently it makes people feel better, perform math better (faster and more accurately), whereas the smell of rosemary, for example, seemed to enable folks only to do math faster—not necessarily with greater accuracy.

What if you actually eat lavender flowers, or, in this case, take capsules of lavender-infused oil, so you could double-blind the study to compare lavender head-to-head to a drug like Valium (lorazepam, known as Ativan), for generalized anxiety disorder.

Generalized and persistent anxiety is a frequent problem, and is treated with benzodiazepines—benzos or downers, like Valium. “Unfortunately, these substances” can not only make you feel like you have a hangover, but “have a high potential for drug abuse” and addiction.

So, they decided to give lavender a try. The drug Ativan certainly reduces anxiety, but, so does lavender. By the end, you couldn’t tell which was which. And, in fact, among those that responded to either, the lavender actually seemed to work better.

“Since lavender oil has no potential for drug abuse and causes no hangover effects [it] appears to be an effective and well-tolerated alternative to benzodiazepine [drugs] for [the] amelioration of generalised anxiety.”

Cautionary Note

There was a case series published in the New England Journal of Medicine. “Prepuberty Gynecomastia Linked to Lavender.” Reports of young boys exposed to lavender-containing lotions, soaps, hair gel, and shampoo starting to develop breasts, which disappeared after these products were discontinued—suggesting that lavender oil may possess hormone-disrupting activity.

And, indeed, when dripped on estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells, lavender does show estrogenic effects, and a decline in male hormone activity, though it’s unknown if similar reactions occur inside the body when lavender flowers or lavender oil is ingested.

5 Ways To Support Our Bodies For Self Healing

Healthy self = Heal thy self | Supporting our bodies for self-healing
Our bodies are designed to heal themselves. They have many self-healing capacities, so let’s look at how we can support these to reveal our healthy self. Healthy self = Heal thy self!

Imagine cutting your finger

Here’s a scenario to consider. You are chopping some food, and you cut your finger. If you take care of it, cleaning it immediately and keeping it clean after the bleeding stops, the cut will heal itself in a few days. If it’s really bad, you might need some additional support like stitches, but it will still heal and will just take a little longer.

If you don’t support that healing, you’ll get into trouble. For example, if you rub dirt into that fresh-cut instead of cleaning it, the healing will be delayed. We need to support the body, and then its natural healing capacity can work.

But what if you cut that same finger every day? That constant damage and injury will mean that your body can’t heal itself. It will try, but that constant insult will prohibit healing.

1. Diet as a repeated injury
The same applies to chronic illnesses, rather than physical injuries. Just like the scenario of cutting your finger every day and it not being able to heal, if we “injure” our body every day by the way we eat and live, then we aren’t giving the body the support it needs to heal itself.

A diet without adequate nutrients is damaging to our whole body every day. Every day that we don’t eat well or sleep well, we are depleting our bodies. We aren’t providing an environment in which our body can heal itself.

Consider eating food that is inflammatory to you every day. It’s just like cutting your finger every day – more damage is occurring, and there is no chance for healing. And this damage relates to much more than just inflammation in our digestive system. If we aren’t getting the nutrients we need every day, this can affect all of the biochemical reactions going on in our bodies. Those nutrients – and the lack of them – affect all the systems of our bodies.

Eating a diet that is lacking nutrients is like injuring yourself every day. Instead, we need to support the body.

2. Medications as a ‘band-aid’
We might be tempted to try some medications to cover up the symptoms of an illness and make us feel better, at least temporarily, but frequently they don’t support self-healing because they have side effects too.

Let’s say that you have the symptoms of a cold – a slightly high temperature, and just not feeling great. So you reach for Tylenol or Aspirin every few hours. By reducing your temperature, the medication might make you feel better for a short while. However, the medicine has also interfered with the natural healing process, because your body was using that high temperature as a means to get rid of the virus. What might have been better would have been to relax, drink plenty of fluids, take a warm Epsom salts bath, and have an early night.

3. Active, not passive
Taking medications or over-the-counter pills requires very little effort on our part – we are quite passive – just popping our pills. But as the title of this blog post says, for a healthy self, we need to heal ourselves. That is an active process. We need to feel empowered to provide a favorable environment for the body. That means DESS – diet, exercise, sleep, and stress reduction, along with love, good relationships, and spirituality. When we put these things in place, then we are no longer cutting our finger every day, and the body can start to heal.

4. Inflammation is the language of discontent with our environment
We know that most chronic illnesses have inflammation at the root of them. This inflammation in our bodies – wherever it might appear – is the body trying to tell us that our environment is not conducive to self healing. It’s like a warning light coming on in our car. If that warning light comes on, we take the car to the garage to get it checked. When we have inflammation or symptoms somewhere in our body, how often do we either do nothing or just pop a pill? What we should do instead is…think that we aren’t providing what the body needs to heal. Think that there is something wrong with our environment. Think about what our body and our environment need instead of what we are providing…

Sometimes, it might be necessary to work with someone to figure this out. It might be that you need some tests to determine that, for example, you are deficient in Vitamin A, or that your hormones are out of balance. A natural health care provider (such as a nutritionist, lifestyle medicine practitioner, naturopath) might be able to help you find out what is out of balance in your environment. Is too much stress making those hormones out of balance? Is a polymorphism creating that vitamin A deficiency? They can then educate you in what seems to be going on. That knowledge can be very empowering.

5. Be empowered
When you understand the workings of the body, and what might be lacking in the body’s environment, then you can make changes and see improvement. Then you are ready to heal thy self. You take an active role and work to rebalance your hormones or eat foods containing vitamin A.

So if you are ill, take some time to look at what might be out of balance in your environment. Is something lacking, is something in excess? It could be nutrition, sleep, stress, difficult relationships – these can all prevent our body from healing itself. We need that good environment. Nurture yourself and be at least as good to your body as you are to your car when its engine light comes on! Take action. Don’t be passive. Let the body do what it is designed to do – heal itself.

Of course, I’m not suggesting we should never use pharmaceuticals. In some instances, especially acute illnesses, they are very important. Yet even if we do use pharmaceuticals, we should still check to see if they deplete the body of certain nutrients/vitamins/minerals, and continue to work to support our self-healing.

Manipulating Acupoints Constructively for Cancer Treatment

Manipulating Acupoints Constructively for Cancer TreatmentWhat is acupressure?

Acupressure is a type of alternative medicine that is carried out by placing physical pressure on different pressure points on the body surface. This technique is a traditional Chinese medicine practice, and it has the same principle as acupuncture.

Acupressure aims to bring relief by correcting imbalances in the flow of Qi. Qi (also pronounced as Chi) is the energy flow that is present in all living things. When there is an imbalance in the flow of Qi, certain medical conditions are manifested.

It is the art of massaging specific points on the body so as to bring out self-healing reflexes. Acupuncture and acupressure target the same anatomic positions. The only difference is the method of manipulation. Acupuncture involves the use of fine, thin needles whereas the latter one involves massage techniques by hands.

How does it work?

In acupressure, the flow of Qi is corrected by applying physical pressure to the main anatomical positions which are connected by channels referred to as ‘meridians’.  Hands, elbow, as well as various mechanical devices, are used to apply physical pressure to the pressure points. The location of the pressure points may be distant from where the symptoms are felt. Over-all, acupressure brings relief by restoring the balance and improving circulation of body fluids.

The theory belonging to Traditional Chinese Medicine states that acupoints are placed in the body in a manner that lies along the meridians. Certain exercises involving stretching may also form a part of this therapy.

What are the advantages of acupressure?

This traditional Asian method aims at restoring body’s energy and balance. Research has proven that this very Qi is disturbed in various ailments, including cancer. Acupressure aids in bringing the Qi back to its normal state, which is believed to help in healing and treating diseases. Acupressure for cancer is also emerging as a useful treatment modality, which is discussed later in the article.

For centuries, acupressure techniques are being used to treat tension headaches, pain (especially in the neck and the back), chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, healing wounds, infertility, impotency, sexual dysfunction, decreased libido, learning disorders, motion sickness, nausea and vomiting; addiction rehabilitation, mental stress, emotional disturbances, and gastrointestinal diseases. It is also useful to get rid of compulsive behaviors and for improving various skin conditions.

Acupressure for cancer:

With the growing advancements in alternative medicine, traditional Chinese medicine is also being applied for the treatment of diseases as deadly as cancer. Acupressure for cancer is an immensely interesting subject, since it is a promising mode of therapy for the disease, and involves certain unique ways to overcome the fatality of abnormal cells and tumor growth. Less data is available regarding acupressure for cancer. However, several studies and research works are available globally that support acupressure for relieving the symptoms cast by cancer treatment.

Acupressure for cancer and the deadly effects of chemotherapy and radiation:

One can treat cancer using toxic emissions and heavy chemical formulas. But these modalities produce a series of untoward effects in the patient, declining their quality of life further. As it already is discussed in the previous articles that severe nausea and vomiting are common side effects of chemotherapy. Moreover, fatigue increased the risk of infection, and normal cell destruction come as bonuses. Acupressure for cancer can help wane away these symptoms by much extent, at least so much so that the patient can live his life somewhat normally when being treated for cancer.

Did you know that your body has three pressure points which can fight off the unwanted symptoms of cancer treatment? No? Well, then we have unlocked the secret for you.

  • The vertical central portion of the front side of your wrist has a point that if massaged by certain techniques, can help alleviate nausea and vomiting by much extent. You can call this point as acupoint # 6. You can locate it by placing the first three fingers of your, let’s say, the left hand on the vertical central part of the wrist of your right hand. Align your left ring finger with the palmer creases of the right limb. Place your left thumb on your left index finger which is placed on the right wrist in a manner that you should feel the depression between the two tendons of your arm. Apply concentrated pressure at this point for at least three minutes. Repeat this exercise with the other hand as well.
  • The web that appears between your index finger and your thumb when you expand your fingers has a point named L14. Applying firm pressure over this area for at least five minutes can help in reducing pain.
  • A useful point, known as acupoint Extra 1, is located just between your eyebrows. Apply pressure at this point for 10 minutes to get relieved from anxiety.

A clinical trial carried out in the year 2007 for evaluating the effects of acupuncture and acupressure on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) revealed that acupuncture had offered a comparatively greater improvement by benefiting by 36% in CRF, whereas acupressure helped by 19%.

Acupressure and quality of life:

Various studies have provided evidence that specific points on the body surface are related to several internal body functions in many ways. Hence, treating these points by gentle massage techniques or by other methods can bring about a variety of health enhancements, which are yet to be proven on solid grounds. The quality of life and acupressure are directly related, since manipulation of acupoints can provide relief from a variety of symptoms such as a headache, fatigue, lower back pain, anxiety, stress, and even chronic ailments like arthritis. Moreover, it acts as a complementary treatment to those suffering from cancer.

Massage Therapy for Cancer Patients

Massage Therapy For Breast Cancer PatientsWhat is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a manual method of working on body’s soft tissues, deep muscles, various pressure points, tendons and ligaments using several techniques and applying fixed and movable pressure, to help relieve stress, promote healing and relaxation. The massage is performed by a professional who uses their hands and fingers to handle different muscles by making various movements like pressing and rubbing. All of these techniques are quite advantageous for the muscular, circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems of the body. Owing to these great benefits, massage therapy for cancer patients is now becoming common.

One of the oldest method of healing, massage therapy, is a clinically oriented health care option, now used widely as a complementary treatment for cancer patients. Massage therapy helps people suffering from cancer by eliminating anxiety, boosting the immunity, and diminishing tiredness and pain. Various modalities of massage therapy are employed for cancer care. Some of them are Swedish massage, aromatherapy massage, acupressure, and reflexology.

How Does Massage Therapy Work?

There are various varieties of massage therapies available, and the therapy offered will depend upon the patient’s individual needs and conditions.

In Swedish massage multiple strokes and moments are used to relax the muscles of the body while lubricating the skin with massage oil. While aromatherapy focuses on the physical, and mental well-being of the person. Various fragrant oils and scents are used to complement and naturally enhance the benefits of massage. Acupressure simply thought as acupuncture without needles, involves applying pressure to acupoints on the body. This Chinese technique is used to treat many diseases.  Reflexology, another modality of massage therapy, is the application of appropriate pressure, to the specific points on the hands, feet or ears that are linked to other parts of the body.

All these approaches and various massage methods emphasize on specific goals by restoring and calming the body and mind, muscles and soft tissues. When a massage therapist massages a particular area of the body, positive electrical activity is generated and transmitted from that region, which leads to increased blood circulation, low levels of pain, better capability to fight diseases, and an increased lymphatic drainage. Massage therapy helps in lowering stress levels and improves quality of life.

Advantages of Massage Therapy with Different Types of Cancer

As per above discussions, there are many different kinds of massage therapy and these have various effects on the body. There are different types of cancer, and their stages and treatment are also variable. All forms of cancer cause pain, it is very prevalent amongst cancer patients and often neglected by physicians. Massage therapy for cancer patients is used increasingly to relieve cancer-related pain and is considered useful and beneficial for their well-being, leading to decreased pain scores in cancer patients. It also helps in relieving other symptoms of cancer such tiredness, difficulty in sleeping, reducing stress and anxiety, decreasing lymphedema and several other side effects, providing healing and relaxation to the cancer patients. A research conducted with 230 cancer patients concluded that healing touch of massage relieves pain and anxiety levels and decreases the need to take painkillers. Massage therapy is also of great advantage in breast cancer patients. The therapeutic process elevates the level of brain chemical  “dopamine “in the brain,  which leads to elevated mood and feeling to goodness and wellbeing, a number of protective white blood cells also increase and help boost the immune system of these patients.

Does Massage Therapy Cause Metastasis?

Metastasis is the spread of cancer from one part of the body to other parts. Although there are various debates and myths present, linking massage to metastasis of cancer, there is no real evidence present to support, that massage therapy in cancer patients leads to or promotes metastasis. Massage therapy for cancer patients is considered safe and rather helpful for the those suffering from cancer. However, any modality of massage therapy, which the patient may plan to undertake, should be properly discussed with the doctor, as there might be potential risk involved for patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer.

However, it is the subject of debate that deep pressure massage therapy might be responsible for the spread of tumor and metastasis of cancer in various body organs. It is, therefore, crucial that one should not directly massage over the tumor area, and it’s surrounding soft tissues and muscles. Deep massage therapy should be avoided in people with bone cancer as deep massage and application of pressure applied over the affected area might cause a bone fracture.

Does Massage Therapy Decrease the Side Effects of Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy is used to treat a wide variety of cancer. Chemotherapy, in addition to the killing of cancer cells, causes severe side effects like anxiety, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, problems with muscle and nerves, muscle pain, kidney and bladder problems. Massage therapy for cancer patients not only helps in dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy but also enhances the positive impact of chemo. The relaxation response caused by massage therapy helps relieve nausea and decreases muscle pain. In 2005, a research stated that acupressure, a type of massage therapy, reduces vomiting and nausea, induced by chemotherapy. Another research study conducted in 2007 stipulated that post- chemotherapy fatigue, physical fatigue, and anemia is reduced after massage therapy in cancer patients.

Does Massage Therapy Decrease the Side Effects of Radiation?

Radiation therapy, also known as radiation or radio, is another form of cancer treatment that relies on radio waves to treat the tumor and decrease its size. However its side effects are also massive and troublesome, they can include, for instance, insomnia, fatigue, hair loss, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, swelling, urinary and bladder changes, and sexual changes. There is an established role of massage therapy in fighting the side effects of radiotherapy. It counters the damaging effects of heat and radiation by healing and soothing through touch. In 2009, a pilot study that included 14 cancer patients receiving acupuncture for four weeks, concluded that massage therapy in these patients relieved Xerostomia, a condition caused by radiation in which salivary glands don’t produce enough saliva that can in turn lead to severe dryness of mouth.

Does Massage Therapy Stimulate the Immune System?

Massage therapy boosts the immune system by increasing the circulation of blood throughout the body. The enhanced circulation of blood leads to delivery of nutrients throughout the body, along with the circulation of lymph, which promotes movement of fighter cells of immune system. The extra boost in immune system through massage helps body fighting potential and speeds up recovery from infection and injury.

Does Massage Therapy Increase Quality of Life?

Massage therapy for cancer patients enhances the quality of life. Massage therapy increases circulation of blood and metabolism, hence activating every cell of the body, increasing immunity, and in the rejuvenation of body and mind. It was proven in 2003 by Department of Mental health science in the UK.

Does Massage Therapy Increase the Survival Rate?

Physical symptoms of cancer are quite distressing for the patients battling cancer. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting, pain and increased fatigue levels. Proper massage therapy along with exercise and change in diet positively affects up to 75 to 95% of cancer patients. Massage therapy for cancer patients leads to improved fatigue levels. The research was conducted by cancer rehabilitation institute at the University of North Colorado.

Intravenous Vitamin C for Cancer Patients

Intravenous Vitamin C TherapyIn 1975, a remarkable case was reported of a 42-year old man suffering from a malignant form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, who experienced a dramatic regression of the cancer after being given large doses of vitamin C intravenously. He seemed cured; so, they stopped the vitamin C, and the cancer came surging back. So, they restarted the vitamin C, apparently inducing a second complete remission. Now, sometimes, cancer does just spontaneously regress—it’s rare, but not unheard of. So, one could argue that the first remission was spontaneous, and it was just a coincidence that it happened when they started the vitamin C, but given the trajectory the cancer was on, followed by the rapid remission, followed by the relapse when the vitamin C was stopped, followed by a second remission once restarted does strongly suggest the vitamin C had something to do with it.

Now, multiple spontaneous regressions do exist. There was a recent case, for example, of a woman with cervical cancer, apparently cured with radiation and chemo, but when the cancer came back, she refused further treatment; yet, the tumors disappeared on their own, and then came back, and then disappeared, then came back, and then disappeared, then came back, and then disappeared for a fourth spontaneous remission, and that was with no apparent treatment at all. So, it’s possible this vitamin C case is just a crazy coincidence fluke, and the vitamin C didn’t help at all. You never know until you put it to the test.

So, these researchers enlisted the help of Linus Pauling, considered the greatest chemist of the 20th century, who was known to be interested in vitamin C. If he couldn’t get funding, nobody could get funding, and he couldn’t get funding. They went to the National Cancer Institute with promising data on the first 40 cancer patients they treated with vitamin C and asked that they carry out a randomized double blind trial, meaning take a group of incurable cancer patients for which we have nothing more to offer, randomly split them up into two groups and infuse one group with vitamin C and the other group with something just saline, basically water, and see who lives longest. Neither the patients nor the doctors would know who got which, to eliminate bias and placebo effects. And they went back year after year after year asking for grants to study it themselves if the National Cancer Institute wasn’t going to do it , and they got rejected year, after year, after year. So, they scraped up whatever funds they could find and did their best with what they had and published their famous findings in 1976.

They didn’t have a controlled trial, but by that point, they had treated a hundred terminal cancer patients with vitamin C. So, they compared their progress to that of a thousand similar patients who didn’t get vitamin C. For each patient treated with vitamin C, they found ten patients about the same age with the same kind of cancer that had been treated at the same hospital but without the vitamin C infusions. This is what they found. Let’s look at breast cancer, for example. Here’s the survival curve for terminal breast cancer—remember these were all terminal cancer patients. As you can see, in the control group, within 100 days, more than 80% of the women were dead, but in the vitamin C group, half were still alive nearly a year later. They had women with terminal breast cancer still alive 2,270 days later and still counting.

The control groups for all the different cancers did predictably bad, with the vast majority dead within one to two hundred days, while the vitamin C treated patients appeared to do substantially better. All in all, the average survival time was four times as great for the vitamin C subjects: more than 200 days compared to only 50 days for the controls. The results, they conclude, clearly indicate that this simple and safe form of medication is of definite value in the treatment of patients with advanced cancer. So what happened?

Critics understandably attacked the study for using after-the-fact controls. You could see how this could introduce bias. If you consciously or unconsciously chose control group patients who were sicker than your treatment group patients, they would die sooner than your patients, but it would have nothing to do with the treatment; the control group folks just started out in a worse place. And, indeed, there’s evidence that is what happened—a full 20% of the control group died within a few days after being declared terminal compared to none in the treatment group, which really does sound fishy. But the trial was successful in finally convincing the National Cancer Institute to fund randomized controlled trials performed by the prestigious Mayo Clinic, no less. What did they find? We’ll find out, next.

The Role Of Detoxification In A Natural Cancer Treatment

Detoxification defines the removal of harmful toxins that accumulate in the body over a period due to different factors. It includes practices such as dieting, chelation therapy, fasting (consuming only specific fruits or foods while completely avoiding other given types), colon cleansing, and the use of specific food supplements. It is considered that detoxification is an important step to take before undergoing a natural cancer treatment that work.Detoxification and Cancer Treatment

How Does Detoxification Work?

Detoxification therapy is a procedure that aims at creating an unfavorable internal environment against the proliferation of pathogens, which include viruses, bacteria, yeast, fungi, and cancer cells. It is normally dependent on the type of detoxification being applied.

In fasting, the low blood sugar and high oxygen concentration obtained promotes a healthy environment for normal cells. At the same time, such an environment depletes the cancer cells of their favorable environment, which is of a high-glucose/low-oxygen concentration.

There are detoxification mechanisms involving the binding of toxic metallic elements by administered chelating agents or proteins. These are substances that bind and cause metallic toxins (such as mercury, copper, gold, zinc, and silver) to be rendered inactive, so as to curb their destructive or harmful effects.

Advantages of Detoxification with Different Types of Cancer

One study involving laboratory rats reported an inhibitory effect against the development of cancer of the liver.

What is the Effect of Detoxification on Metastasis?

When complemented with other immunotherapy procedures, detoxification procedures have been shown to assist in reversing metastasis. One example is in the treatment of bone metastasis prior to and after active immunotherapy, while applying the use of ultraviolet B-irradiated tumor cells.

Does Detoxification Enhance the Effect of Chemotherapy?

Many detoxification procedures (including clay therapy and others) are beneficial and enhance pre- and post-chemotherapeutic procedures. These detoxification strategies are aimed at preparing both the internal and external body environment of a patient so as to achieve optimal results during and after chemotherapy. It is also used as a pre-step for natural cancer treatment.

They prepare the body to stabilize faster during the recovery period after chemotherapy while one is waiting for the next treatment. Detoxification using a specific type of calcium clay has been reported to make some patients stable enough to complete their long chemotherapy series; many patients withdrew before completion.

Does Detoxification Enhance the Effect of Radiation?

Detoxification procedures have also been shown to enhance the achievement of optimal results in radiotherapy. It should be noted that being subjected to excessive radioactivity is potentially harmful.

Detoxification procedures, including the use of special clay and other adsorbents, exhibits the positive effect of eliminating excess radioactive elements. Studies by Raymond Dextriet have documented a considerable reduction of excess radioactive material in organisms; he used a Geiger counter to demonstrate that dry clay can significantly absorb much of the surrounding radioactive elements.

Can Detoxification Reduce the Side Effects of Chemotherapy and Radiation?

Detoxification and radiation often have adverse effects on patients. Detoxification helps to combat and reduce these side effects. Detoxification fights the following: the fatigue that is unresolved by resting (and that can last for weeks or months), and also pain due to nervous system damage.

In the case of radiation therapy, in which the patient suffers pain all over, and where burns and destruction of healthy tissue are inevitable, detoxification procedures (both topical and oral administrations) help to preserve the healthy tissue and the skin at the radiation site. It also helps to prevent adverse side effects to a significant degree.

If you are following a natural cancer treatment, detoxification can help you prepare your body for the treatment by enhancing the healing potential of your immune system. Shortly put, this preliminary step’s main aim is to remove all harmful substances from your body, preparing it to receive all the “soldiers” it needs to fight the disease.

Does Detoxification Have an Influence on the Immune System?

There are many detoxification formulations studied and known to be anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antiviral. These greatly enhance and strengthen the immune systems of patients. In one 1987 Zuin study, a detoxification formulation was found to promote the immune system functionality of patients.

Some formulations have been shown to promote the body’s natural resistance to infections, and to boostthe ability of the body. Both to withstand the invasion of pathogens (harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses), and to recuperate.

Does Detoxification Improve Quality of Life and Survival Rate?

Detoxification greatly enhances wellness, quality of life, survival rate, and longevity of patients. There are insignificant levels of toxicity or side effects associated with approved detoxification procedures. These procedures primarily boost the ability of the body to eliminate toxins and pathogens. With a strong immune system achieved through detoxification, many patients have had improved wellness and a better quality of life.

In a few words…:

Detoxification is the removal of harmful toxins, which accumulate in the body over a period, using the available natural ways of excretion. It involves many varieties of therapies, but all of them aim to achieve that core objective.

Among the key benefits of detoxification is its capacity to boost the immune system’s functionality. Other benefits include

  • the regulation of proper metabolism( the breakdown, uptake, and utilization of food and other biochemical processes)
  • the immune-moderation
  • immune potentiating effects
  • the potentiating or enhancement of chemotherapeutic treatment effects.

Detoxification also leads to the reduction of adverse side effects; enhancement of radiotherapy treatment; inhibition of metastases or spread of cancer and other malignancies; survival of convalescent patients; and finally, improvement of affected persons.

Takeaway notes:

Reflexology in Cancer

Advantages of Reflexology for Breast CancerWhat is Reflexology?

Reflexology is the appositeness of appropriate pressure to specific points on the feet, hands and the ear. A reflexologist is of the opinion that these areas and reflex points harmonize to various organs of the human body as well as the systems and that applying pressure over them has a beneficial effect on the persons’ general health.

How does reflexology work?

The primary mechanism behind reflexology is that it helps in reducing the stress that in turn increases the potential for healing and help body cell in re-growth.

Sir Henry Head and Sir Charles Sherrington performed a research and according to their study, there is a relationship between the skin and the central nervous system. That’s the theory behind the healing mechanism of reflexology, which is, by applying pressure at a certain point, the body starts healing or reducing pain.

Where can you find reflexology?

Universally, practitioners who are licensed by the American Reflexology Certification Board can be found in certain therapeutic settings around the world.

Advantages of reflexology with different types of cancers:

People with cancer gain benefit from reflexology as it helps in reducing their anxiety, their levels of stress, and contributes in relieving their pain. It also aids in elevating their mood and gives the state of being well.

Some other benefits of this therapy are:

  • Its ability to support nerve stimulation
  • increase energy
  • boosts circulation
  • induce a deep state of relaxation
  • eliminate toxins
  • stimulate the central nervous system
  • prevent migraine
  • clean up urinary tract condition
  • speed recovery from trauma or surgery
  • helps relieve sleep disorder
  • reduce depression
  • relieves pain

What is the effect of reflexology on metastasis?

Massage has shown to be beneficial in reducing one’s anxiety

Does reflexology enhance the effect of chemotherapy?

As our body ages, the peripheral nerve endings become less sensitive in various parts of our body system, particularly in the extremities. By applying pressure on a single point, nerve function starts stimulating around on more than 7000 nerve endings which increase its sensitivity and keeps it in a healthy state. People who are having chemo with reflexology experience fewer episodes of shortness of breath, which is a common side effect faced by patients with chemotherapy. Patients with reflexology can perform their daily task quickly like climbing the stairs, getting dressed, going grocery, etc. as compared to patients who are having chemo session alone.

However, certain research studies still claim that reflexology does not seem to be effective in reducing emotional problems that one faces due to chemotherapy, such as anxiety, stress, and other psychological problems. It also does not aid in reducing nausea, which is a very common side effect of chemotherapy. Hence, the role of this therapy for cancer treatment is still controversial.

Does reflexology enhance the effect of radiation therapy?

Cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy often complain about early fatigue. Reflexology for cancer treatment has shown to relieve these symptoms of easy fatigue, sickness, anxiety and nausea in such individuals. Studies have reported better experiences of patients with breast cancer, who undergo radiotherapy with reflexology for cancer treatment. They are observed to have an improved quality of sleep and lesser fatigue during and after their radiation sessions.

Can reflexology reduce the side effects of radiation and chemo drugs?

Wyatt said that “These supportive measures are intended to create hard link for the patient to the treatment center,”

Reflexology reduces the side effect of chemotherapy because it enhances the function of peripheral nerve endings, along with improving the use of the central nervous system. It is also beneficial because it helps in alleviating the mood symptoms and in decreasing nausea

Wyatt said that “We see things like a decline in depression and anxiety, and improvements in spirituality and emotional quality of life,”

According to research at MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, patients who are having chemotherapy face a lot of problems with anxiety, stress, nausea, and pain. Reflexology is the treatment which helps them cope with these side effects.

What is the influence of reflexology on the immune system?

The most suitable way to boost your body’s defense mechanism is by undertaking reasonable measures such as reflexology and acupuncture.

Stress, lack of sleep, obesity and poor diet: these are some features which reduce immunity whereas reflexology is the treatment which deals with all these predisposing agents. It supports and enhances the peripheral nerve ending which in turn helps in reducing the stress and sleep disorder. All these factors eventually contribute towards and improved immune system.

Does reflexology increase the quality of life and the survival rate?

Reflex therapy increases the quality of life because it aids in reducing stress, anxiety, pain, reduce depression, lack of sleep; aces recovery from surgery, prevents a migraine, enhances central nervous system function and much more.

There are seven important sites in our body which help in increasing our immune system which indirectly boost the quality of life. These points are mentioned as follows:

  • great ravine
  • great rushing
  • three yin crossing
  • Three-mile points
  • she mansion
  • crooked pond
  • upper si of qi

SUMMARY:

Reflexology is the art of applying pressure on different parts of body to enhance nerve functioning in the body. It aids in reducing pain, stress, and nausea which arise as a consequence of various cancer therapies. It also boosts the immune system of our body.

Validity And Therapeutic Efficacy Of Ozone Therapy

As we all know that healthy cells need oxygen to live. The potential for the inclusion of ozone therapy in medicine is purposeful. It has been used as an alternative medical approach for the past four decades.Ozone Therapy Treatment For Breast Cancer

Ozone therapy is not used only for beauty treatments. It can also have impressive effects in cancer treatments

Ozone is a molecular gas with three oxygen atoms that was discovered in the mid-nineteenth century. Despite having some dangerous effects, researchers conclude that it has more therapeutic effects in medicine than being threatening.

Definition Of Ozone Therapy:

The introduction of ozone gas (a highly reactive form of pure oxygen) to treat medical conditions. It is an alternative medical treatment to increase the amount of oxygen in the body.

Contrary to the normal healthy human cells that love oxygen, in which the body is suffering from a disease that causes viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi, including HIV/AIDS, cancer, arthritis and microbial cells all are almost anaerobic (live without oxygen/air) Or in other words, these microbes cannot live in oxygen.

Imagine what will happen if they are exposed to highly pure and reactive form of oxygen! What might happen if this ozone gas is infused slowly in body on daily practice for a few months, saturating all the body fluids and the cells present in it?

How Ozone Therapy Works:

Ozone gas is a very high oxidizing agent so its high concentrations can be toxic to the human body and is also considered a cause of pollution.

On the contrary, small doses stimulate some naturally occurring antioxidants in the body which help fight diseases. The reactive properties of ozone help the body to remove these obstruction and heal the diseased cells.

After ozone therapy in bacteria, the phospholipids (derivatives of fat) and lipoprotein undergo oxidation hence, the virtue of the bacterial cell wall is disrupted.

In fungi, The ozone treatment inhibits the cell growth at different stages.

In viruses, the viral capsid (protein shell of viruses) is damaged and this in turn disturbs the reproductive cycle by disrupting the virus to cell contact.

The cells have weak enzyme coating that makes them vulnerable to virus invasion, leading them to be susceptible to oxidation (a reaction in which a material combines with oxygen and gives up electrons) and excretion from the body. Which then alternatively replaces them with healthy cells.

Oxygen metabolism:

Ozone therapy leads to an increase in the red blood cell glycolysis (process of conversion of glucose splits into two molecules of a three-carbon sugar) rate that results in an increased amount of oxygen in the tissues.

Ozonotherapy Activates Immune System:

A whole cascade of immunological responses are generated by introducing ozone infusion therapy. It activates our defense system i.e the monocytes and lymphocytes (white blood cells) and induce the production of cytokines (proteins released by cells of immune system) hence, its one of the best alternative treatment of cancer in which immune system slows down.

It also induces specific enzymes and helps in treating necrotic tissues and stroke.

Routes Of Administration Of Ozone:

Depending upon the condition being treated, there are several ways of administering ozone in the body:

  • Extracorporeal re-circulatory autohemo perfusion: ( In which blood out of one arm is ozonated, sterilized and filtered outside the body, and then pumped continuously back into the other arm.)
  • Autohemotherapy (mild treatment ex vivo of blood with ozone, i.e., outside the body and then prompt infusion in the donor)
  • Direct infusion of gaseous ozone via vein or artery especially in the case of critical limb ischemia (inadequate blood supply to limb)
  • Colorectal insufflation (blowing) of ozone like an enema to treat colon cancer, fistula, etc.
  • Ozone is also used as topical treatment of ulcer, burns and infected wounds difficult to heal.
  • Ozone vaginal insufflation (blowing)
  • Ozone ear insufflation (blowing in ear)
  • Ozone charged drinking water
  • Ozone air purification (low levels of ozone sterilise the room air)

Benefits And Uses Of Ozonotherapy:

It has a number of advantages in treating disease conditions of the body:

  • Diabetes: Some evidence shows that ozone improves blood sugar by activating the antioxidant system.
  • Slipped disc in spine by releasing the growth factors.
  • Heart disease (improves oxygen utility to reduce ischemia in heart diseases)
  • Inactivates HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) owing to the reduction of HIV P24 core protein
  • Activates immune system by releasing cytokines (proteins to fight infections)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Ulcers and abscess
  • It can reduce many cases of chronic pain through acting upon the pain receptors.
  • Healing effects on herpes, macular degeneration, dental infections, cystitis, gangrenes, burns, infections of intestines, etc
  • Cancer: Since the cancer cells are anaerobic, so they die when exposed to oxygen via ozone RHP technique in which ozone is infused in the blood stream.
  • Used as antibacterial agent to treat oral infections.

Side Effects/Disadvantages:

As it is said that “excess of anything is bad”. Similarly, ozone gas can display hazardous effects too:

  • Ozone (O3) from the atmosphere can be toxic when inhaled from the polluted air.
  • Safety zone has not been studied enough
  • If given intravenously, it may cause blood clots in lungs and get very fatal/life threatening
  • Dietary antioxidants like Vit E, C, etc. can prevent effects of Ozone (O3)
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding are the two on which there is not much of research made so staying on a safe side ozone therapy should be avoided in them.

Conclusion:

The versatility and magnitude of beneficial effects of ozone therapy have become clear in treating cancerous cells being anaerobic, orthopedics, mucosal and cutaneous infection. The future must focus on the inception of safe and defined parameters to determine precise guidelines for treating cancers, infections, etc

Ozonotherapy with its miraculous properties is without a doubt a significant tool in medicine. It is now up to us, the patients and physicians to demand access to such healing substances that nature has gifted us.
