High Cobra yoga pose uses your own body weight along with gravity to tone and condition muscles. An easy exercises that can be done almost anywhere. This flowing yoga pose benefits women recovering from breast cancer because they can tone the pectoral muscles which lie underneath the breasts. Strong pectoral muscles provide a strong surface for breast tissue to sit on. This exercises also work the triceps, the muscles at the backs of the arms, which is an area a lot of women struggle with.

  • Rejuvenate spine and relieves back stiffness
  • Great for lumbago, sciatica and prolapsed discs
  • Strengthens spine and reduces low back pain
  • Lungs gain elasticity
  • Increases blood circulation to pelvic region & digestive tract
  • Relieves gas, bloating and cramping

Contraindications

  • Disc displacement or sharp back pain
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Abdominal surgery and inflammation

Instructions

  1. Begin on the belly with hands under shoulders, elbows in.
  2. INHALE, root down and engage buttocks and legs, lift head and chest, continue to
    lengthen out through the legs.
  3. Press into arms and hands right after you lift through LOW COBRA (elbows stay bent)
    with pelvis on the ground.
  4. Do not straighten arms if the pelvis lifts off the ground.
  5. Repeat 5 times if comfortable.
  6. INHALE, and sustain HIGH COBRA for 3 breath.
  7. EXHALE, lift hips and come back into Child’s Pose.

Please note that all chest and spine openers, as well as backbends should be modified if you are experiencing lymphedema or had surgery.

To experience the benefits of yoga for breast cancer, it is essential that you begin with simple, gentle yoga movements. You should also consult a doctor before you begin practicing yoga. It is also necessary that you follow a yogic diet that consists of a mainly vegetarian diet to enhance the benefits of yoga.
